Re: 2007 Change in Naval Air Station Key West Air Installation Compatible Use Zone (AICUZ).Flight Noise Affecting Residential Area Stock Island
Dear Captain Brown:
The Upper Keys Citizens Association Inc. (UKCA) is dedicated as an educational, nonprofit, non-partisan civic organization, organized to protect, enhance and contribute to the quality of life in the Keys. We have long appreciated and been proud having the Navy in Key West and consider it a good neighbor. We share concerns of neighbors on Stock Island regarding the recent change AICUZ and flight pattern for landings/take off of military jets at the Navy Base and they are:
1) That the Navy has not complied with and met the necessary and required environmental standards, impact and compatibility studies for the change;
2) Long established (1950’s) Communities on South Stock Island have been tremendously more impacted after the change. We share their concern regarding the detrimental noise effects on their health, quality of life and property values;
3) We support our neighbors claim that without requisite prior public input, the 2007 AICUZ is invalid and that requested documentation provided by the Navy has been found to be less than accurate;
4) We support our Stock Island neighbors in their request for a truthful full investigation and disclosure as to why changes in AICUZ and flight paths were made after so many years and want to know who requested the change? Was it the City of Key West, County Administrator, County Commissioner or Developer?
Without a full and public review, there is the appearance that the changes in the ACUIZ were made based on obsolete or invalid data, or preferential treatment of one neighbor over another.” We hope that this issue can be resolved in the near future. Sincerely, Michael F.Chenoweth, PRESIDENT
