I am writing a letter right now and sending it certified! Everyone should send the governor a letter .] Answer to this question is......Yes you all are idiots....at least on this web page. May 28, 2008 regarding the sunshine law: Do the monroe county officials, state attorney mark kohl, sonny mccoy, maria digennaro think we're all idiots? we need to get the governor involved at this point because once again, this law has been broken. I am writing a letter right now and sending it certified! Everyone should send the governor a letter . _______________________________________________________ I guess being mayor was too difficult for Sonny McCoy.... then why is he running for re-election? He should just make this his last term in office. _______________________________________________________ Has the hickory house been sold yet? does anybody know? and what has the county done with the money? _______________________________________________________ I know it can be confusing with the number of people running, but hre is the correct information: Bill Estes, Democrat, is running in the District#1 race, and Heather Carruthers is running in the District #3 race for the Monroe County Commission. They're both Democrats and don't have a primary. _______________________________________________________ I used to work for heather and I have to say I have never met a more vicious angry lesbian in my life. I just found out that she is taking money from David Horan for the Stock Island hotel. I don’t know if it is a hurricane shelter or not, but it sure blows. tracymulrooney@yahoo.com _______________________________________________________ Well what has it been two weeks for Roman Gastesi? His not so well hidden aliance with DiGennaro came out at his very first meeting, suggesting that we look into the purchase of the 9 million dollar marina!! DiGennaro was quick to point out that it would be a perfect time since the marina is in foreclosure. Even though Gastesi has stated to several people that he has bucked heads with DiGennaro I don't believe it, and frankly I am insulted that he thinks us dumb keys people don't see thru it. He has everyone singing his praises with the "reaching out" to the needy people by listening to everyones issues and "bringing all parties together" this is crap. Wake Up!!! He was hand selected by the Gang of Three, he has no experience being an Administrator and has stated publicly that the Deputy County Administrator will be running things, yea because the only thing he is interested in is public relations. Hopefully we will have at least two new Commissioners after the election and they will use the six month clause to get rid of Gastesi!! There are some who think he is worse than Willi hopefully he won't be here long enough to find out!!! _______________________________________________________ Rumor is that: District 3; Bill Estes has made a deal with the Stock Island Developers too, (the developers that want to build the 300 room Hotel in Safe Harbor), heard that Estes said he will be accommodating and flexible with them. Also read in the Coconut Telegraph that Heather Carruthers was bought and paid for by this same group? Looks like two members, Spehar and McCoy of “The Gang of Three” know they will lose this election? Wonder if these Commissioners’s are trying to get their own NEW “Gang of Two" together, along with DiGennaro, which makes "The NEW Gang of Three"? Folks wake up; get yourself educated before you vote this Aug. 26 primary. keyscares@yahoo.com _______________________________________________________ Why is it okay for the Monroe county school district to spend 94 million dollars plus a year (including grants and govt. subsidies probably way over 100 mil) and no one bitches. We have declining enrollment, declining taxes, and a declining population. The fcat scores are still way below the states average and Assevedo starts waving the flag when the scores go up a few points. I’m tired of hearing the “its for the kids whine”. If all us adults move then who will pay the taxes? Then everyone wants to dump on the cops for driving their cop cars and parking them in the neighborhoods they live in. The cop budget is 42 million. The street cops get a small portion. They are the poor bastards on the front lines. Yet we have a money losing Sheriff’s air force. We have some devoted cops working for measly pay while putting their lives on the line. When the heads of these organizations get the money they are allowed to do what they want with it. That’s the problem: not enough public oversight on spending. Even the school board has a battle every time they ask for spending cuts. The problem with both organization is that they need change. We need new blood in there. Throw out the tax spending thieving incumbents. We need fiscal responsibility and we need a break from overpopulated administrations and helicopters. I think both organizations need change! |
|
May 26, 2008 I am a Democrat who will change my party to Republican, just so I can vote for Murphy, Wigington and Rojas. I want to make sure McCoy and Spehar are out and make sure Murphy stays in. It is easy. Any Democrat can do this and I highly encourage as many Democrates to do this. Everyone will then vote in the November presidential race and so, this will not effect you from voting for the Democratic candidate. |

May 26, 2008 The city is not taking in as much revenue for cruise ship passengers because of fewer cruise ships coming to Key West. If the city would make a deal with the Navy, and allow passengers to simply "walk off" the cruise ships instead of having to transport them out of the mole area, they could save all the money they give to the conch tour trains (HTA) and keep all the profits. It seems lately that the city, navy and county make so many deals behind closed doors, that they could work out this deal. _______________________________________________________ People are leaving the Keys because it SUCKS! You have to be a millionaire to live here! _______________________________________________________ I can't understand why Randy Acevedo wants to continue with housing for school teachers when over 30 school teachers have been laid off for next year. It is no longer accurate to state that hundreds of teachers leave the Keys due to lack of affordable housing. There are no teaching jobs for the teachers. That's why they are leaving. _______________________________________________________ Today is Memorial day. And I feel so sorry for the families who have lost a loved one fighting this war. It wasn't for my freedom, it was for the oil. _______________________________________________________ When I hear navy planes fly over head........ I hear the sound of freedom. _______________________________________________________ I want to make sure we break up the Gang of Three in this next election. For Sonny McCoy's seat.... I am not so sure about Heather Curruthers but I am sure that Sloan is a very environmental Consciences person. I believe Sloan would make a good candidate and wonder why Last Stand has not endoursed him? Also, I am sure about Kym Wygington. If we vote Kym in, and re-elect Sylvia Murphy, then we have changed the gang of 3! Get Dixie out!!!!!!!! |

May 25, 2008 Are the rumors true about Heather Carruthers's? The rumor is....she has been bought and paid for by the developers on Stock Island who want to build the 300 room hotel on the working waterfront? She is running for County Commissioner District 1.. in the November general election. Do we want another Commissioner who is pro developement to replace a member of "The Gang of Three"? _______________________________________________________ - there was no opposition to this at the meeting! we only hope that DCA will reject this - A Transmittal resolution by the Monroe County BOCC-proposed amendment to the 2010 Comprehensive Plan to amend the text of the educational FLUM category policies 101.4.11 and 101.4.21 of the Comp Plan: - encouraging affordable, employee, and workforce housing at existing and future school sites;- allocating residential density to the Education (E) Future Land Use Category,- providing for severability and repeal of inconsistent provisions, providing for transmittal to the Department of Community Affairs and Sec of State. The housing market as we all know is in a crisis now. As School Board Chair Steve Pribramsky stated on the Morning Magazine last week-people can get homes on the market now that are cheaper than what Mr. Swift wants to build as “affordable” and they own the land. Let’s put an end to this ridiculous development on school land! Our educational sites should be used for EDUCATION! Bring the kids!!!! _______________________________________________________ RAB meeting - June 11, 2008 -- Additional Information Hello This meeting will cover ALL restoration projects at NAS Key West properties throughout the lower Keys. Not just Boca Chica Field. Find out what's going on in your neighborhood. Ask about the clean up of SuperFund sites scattered through out Key West and the Lower Keys. |

May 22, 2008 Well everyone, you missed an exiting BOCC meeting yesterday! If you could only have seen the circus show. Mayor Sonny McCoy hands his throne to Mario DiGennaro (as good dictators do). It was done at the very end of the meeting, which came as a surprise to everyone. So, now, once again, we will have some very exciting BOCC meetings with the czar back at the helm. And if you missed the quarrel between DiGennaro and Neugent, go to the website to see the action. Another day in paradise. I can't wait till November! Everyone MUST vote the Gang of Three and this majority out! If you are a Democrate, change your ticket for the race between Sonny McCoy vs. Rejos, and Dixie Spehar vs. Wiggington. Vote against Sonny and Dixie. The most important thing is that we for once and for all stop this majority of BOCC's who have been ruining the Keys! Let's finaly get some good people in office, who don't kiss butt to the developers! |

May 21, 2008 Hello Everyone, Now is the time to prepare questions for this panel. I will be attending and would be glad to present your questions in written form for official responses. Please distribute this notice to other concerned citizens. Thanks Paul Caruso pcaruso@texas.net The restoration advisory board (RAB) of naval air station key west , made up of community members, representatives of the navy, state and federal regulatory agencies, is holding it’s annual operations meeting to discuss environmental clean up activities at the station. The meeting will be held on June 11, 2008 at 7PM at the pier house and Caribbean spa on One Duval st. key west. The public is invited to attend and participate in an informal question and answer period following the business portion of the RAB meeting. Free parking will be available at the pier house for attendance at the meeting. Technical experts on the environmental program will be on the hand to meet with community members at that time. Documents on the environmental program at naval air station key west, are available for public review and copying at the Monroe county library, 700 Flemming st. They are located in the local and state historical department. For further information, please contact Robert Courtright, installation restoration manager, at (305) 293 – 2881. _______________________________________________________ Why is Heather Carruthers even being mentioned, her race does not start until she runs in November. The race right now is Sylvia Murphy vs Gary Bauman, Kim Wigington vs Dixie Spehar, and Carlos Rajos vs Sonny McCoy. Put your attention and learning skills to work on these candidates now. _______________________________________________________ I heard County Administrator Roman Gastesi explain that he will ask the commission to take off the agenda, the item pertaining to transfer of Key Largo funds for waste water, so that he can get up to speed on this item as he is new in his office and wants to work with the community in Key Largo. Wow! what a breath of fresh air from Willie Nilly! This is a very responsible action to take. _______________________________________________________ It do'nt matter if your gay or straight.... everybody flushes the toilet....... right! |

May 20, 2008 Caruthers and all her lesbian supporters want to make it sound like she and firm are one. Firm took a lot of people and she was only a spokesman. She never went to tallahassee alone. There were always at least five other people with her. None of them can stand her. Her pushy abrasive manner actually hurt their cause. Now they are using firm as a biased political organization and risking their nonprofit status. _______________________________________________________ Our KWHS has been one of the top schools in the U.S. for '07 and '08. I truly find that hard to believe _______________________________________________________ Roy's trailer park (rtp) was the talk on bill becker show today. let me tell the story a different way than the way it was played out. The people who live in rtp last year, paid $700 - $800 to rent the lot which their trailer sits on. Now, in order to continue living in rtp, they must sign a 30 year contract, tying them up for those years to rent, not own, which is a new concept here in the Keys, where developers are no longer selling land and home, but home only as the developer continues to collect rent for the land each month. They do not own the land, but bear the responsibility of it's upkeep. The residents of rtp will have the responsibility of raising their homes above flood level, which fl. state will enforces in next 5 years. This will be an added expense to the renter. This information was also was not presented to the residents when this proposal was offered to them by Michael Browning the owner of rtp. By year 2010, their rents will have increased $500 from what they paid in 2007. And each year their lot rentals will continue to increase an additional 3%. If residents did not sign the 30 year lease by jan 08, they got a higher increase to rent the lot's for this year. This pressures residents to sign. If they break the 30 year contract, they will loose.......... ? and the best part is Michael Browning and his partners get to keep the rogos, so they can build market rate elsewhere in the Keys, furthering impacting our already built out critical and environmentally sensitive area of the world. The owner gets increase, guarenteed rent, does not have to bear the responsibility of upkeep for each lot and gets to build elsewhere. He looses nothing, but gains everything. And when all the votes are case by our commissioners, they will proclaim what a win-win situation this is because it is "affordable". _______________________________________________________ I don't think there is anything wrong with being gay and running for office. Gay people are just as capable as heterosexuals for any job. We are not that backward here in the keys' ..... are we? |

May 19, 2008 what do i look for in a candidate? i see all the spending the county has done i don't know if all the spending falls on the heads of our commissioners for one thing, with the price of gas, and what i have witnessed here in the keys, allowing employees to drive county vehicles to and from work, does not seem appropriate to me.I believe these official cars should be parked each day at their jobs, and employees should provide their own transportation to their jobs.it is not just the price of gas, but wear and tear, and then what if they get in an accident?does this fall on the shoulders of the commissioners? maybe if i heard a candidate address this, it would show me that the candidate was thinking in areas never addressed, yet which costs us tax payers huge amounts of money.when we are in such a tight financial crunch, we need to tighten the belt |

May 18, 2008 I like the idea of building projects seeking permits, to also have to submit a bond to ensure the project will be completely financed and not go bankrupt. _______________________________________________________ Let me explain to everyone what this 300 unit luxury hotel wanting to be built in Stock Island is all about. It is the developers attempt to avoid paying $100,00 - $150,000 per unit for their Rogos. It is that simple. The hotel was never originally designed to be built for the purpose of a hurricane shelter. This is just a ploy to get the building fees waived. The county could use 45 million dollars, which would be the cost to build a 300 unit hotel! We have cut social services, jobs at the expense of citizens. County commissioners should NOT allow this hotel to be built without charging developers 45 million dollars! _______________________________________________________ when Paul Horan was asked by the KW Citizen newspaper where his poll came from the paper wrote: “ Horan would not explain how the poll is being conducted or how those being questioned are chosen” My opinion: If this poll were ever considered as the consensus of citizens (and it will be because 3 of the sitting BOCC members will try to justify their approval votes), then let me submit my own poll! I could show a 100% dissatisfaction of citizens polled for this hotel proposal. The bottom line is that this poll is bogus , and cannot be used for any practical purpose. _______________________________________________________ Irene Toner – you go girl! _______________________________________________________ "what would make you vote for any candidate in the next election ? .... does it matter? _______________________________________________________ Paul Horan is pushing for the development of a 300 luxury hotel, for a bullshit reason. He is the same person behind the AICUZ switching from Key Have to the other side of Stock Island. _______________________________________________________ What difference does it make if Sheriff Rick Roth, Keys Energy and Fl. Keys Aqueduct supports the 300 luxury hotel in Stock Island? _______________________________________________________ Great Editorial in Sunday’s Key West Citizen! _______________________________________________________ Kudos to : Mayor Morgan McPherson, Mark Rossi and Barry Gibson in their votes against approval of Simonton and Green St. Development of market rate condos. Obviously, it is a new development and should be required to build 30% affordable. Sad that the majority of KW commissioners approved of this project because it now allowes to 100% of these units to be built market rate. I wish these politicians would stop crying how badly we need affordable housing. This was missed chance and the problem with our politicians _______________________________________________________ Lesbian Heather Carruthers fought for our windstorm insurance. She fought the big insurance industry and helped so that i could afford my citizens windstorm insurance. She has my vote! _______________________________________________________ I like Sandra Downs because I know she is not connected to the BUBBA system! _______________________________________________________ The next BOCC meeting will be Friday, in marathon. If you can make it......... please attend |

May 17, 2008 hey, that person who wrote in explaining how a lesbian should not be elected to public office because she does not have children or a "typical" family and can't understand what heterosexual's concerns would be ..... was sad. I would say that because Heather does not have children, that she has more time to devote to office. Obviously, Heather would understand what it means to have a family with children, she herself was a child with parents and grew up in a "traditional" family structure. She not only understands situations and the culture of being raised in this environment, but understands another and different life style, living as a homosexual. I do not believe this is a "chosen" sexuality, but a natural development which GOD has created. I think for this reason, and many more, that Heather would actually be a great commissioner. Living a narrow life style, obviously developed this person's way of thinking, which is not heathly and describes discrimination and a prejudice. _______________________________________________________ There's another story in the paper, of another development project gone belly up because they do not have enough money to finish their building. Why not make it mandatory that when obtaining their building permits, that they submit a bond to insure they will have enough finances to complete the project? This will ensure that they get completed. _______________________________________________________ Who cares about Heather Carruthers' sexual orientation?? No one seemed to be bothered by her personal life when she was spending considerable time and energy to save ALL of Monroe County from obscene property insurance increases. Although I could be wrong, I very much doubt that it was Heather who made her own personal life an issue in this race. My guess is that this issue has been deliberately created by an angry resident who would rather someone else win (do you know how to spell "smear tactic"?). Can't we be just a little more grown up than this? To the other contributer who voiced concern about Heather Carruthers not being able to adequately represent the community because she might have no children (?): 1) The Monroe County Commission has little impact on School Board policy, expenditure and tax revenue--in these critical areas the the school board and the commission are quite seperate, and 2) there is no rational reason to believe that not having a child precludes anyone from having integrity. At this juncture, I intend to vote for integrity. _______________________________________________________ I will vote for experience. I think Dixie Spehar and Sonny McCoy have been doing a great job for our community because they understand we need jobs, growth and more taxes for our county. Development is a wonderful thing for the Keys. People are suffering enough and we need to bring more money into our economy. Million dollar houses is what it will take to help. |

May 16, 2008 It's amazing to me how much time and energy our BOCC 's spend on affordable housing. Our "Affordable Housing" is so expensive, that you can find homes on the market for less money..... and that's sad. Today, we have more pressing issues that are not given the time or care as we are in a critical state for our water quality, dying reef (we have only 10% remaining of the reef) and so many more crucial topics. Yet, the majority of our commissioners work for the developers, pass all their building permits, change rules to our comprehansive plan and more. How sad this is. _______________________________________________________ In response to the poster who says that heather Caruthers being gay does not matter; It does, in fact, matter. Caruthers is the owner of a lesbian only? guesthouse?. She does not have a family of her own. It is good to know and understand that children need an education, and that workers need housing. But that is not nearly enough. A candidate for Commissioner should represent the majority of the voters. And the majority of the voters have a family, and have children. Getting funding for schools and improving our schools is not a vote getter catch phrase to them. It is a daily worry and an overarching concern for those of us who are parents. Our families are not visitors who come down from New York every six months. Our families are the source of our very existence- every day. Our families are everything to us. To families here in the Keys, and indeed everywhere, better schools and affordable housing are practically a life and death issue. Caruthers excludes men entirely from her guesthouse and restaurant. Tell me, who else excludes half of the population from their business? What kind of world does she live in, and more importantly, what kind of world is she interested in forcing upon the rest of us? Furthermore, her clientele, her bread and butter, consists of lesbians from out of town exclusively. Do you think that she has any interest in our families, our schools, or our future? Her clientele by and large do not come here to view the ocean or marvel at our natural habitats. They come here to view and savor each other. She has made herself rich by doing so, and there is nothing wrong with that. But now, she wishes to be our representative and to have real power over us; real power over school funding, our natural resources, over our jobs, our taxes, and our families. I encourage every voter to think about this and make up their own minds. I personally believe that it is not okay to hate or be biased against anyone for their color, sexual preference, or any other superficial qualities. But I do believe that we should consider what a persons? interest are, where their money comes from, and who they associate with. For me, Caruthers cannot represent the people of Monroe County when she is simply not one of them, not amongst them, and not dependent upon them. Her money, her friends, and her interests lie outside of us. And those are the interests that she represents. _______________________________________________________ Hey, I see the Jane site is back up....... where did you guys go? |

May 14, 2008 I am looking for an honest person in the next election. I am tired of the current politics and want real honest people on the board. I don't care if they have no experience, it is the one's with most experience, who seem to be the most "greased" . _______________________________________________________ Some idiot wrote, "Then why is Heather Carruthers not announcing she's Gay" Maybe it's not obvious to everyone as it is to me, but why does being gay make someone qualified (or not) to be a county commissioner? I've always thought Mario Di Gennaro seemed a little light in the loafers, what with that haircut, his stomach staple weight loss and his "close men friends" like Ralphie and Ed Swift, but it hasn't helped him be a county commissioner, has it? To the best of my knowledge, NONE of the sitting county commissioners and NONE of the candidates have made announcements that explicitly state their sexual preference. If they do, where does it stop? Hey, why don't they announce everything? All candidates should complete this form: : Dear Candidate: In the interest of full disclosure, a certain Property Rights Activist (Who has run for office, but, during the course of HIS campaign, never admitted he was gay) wants to know all the prurient details of your personal sexuality. Please circle all relevant adjectives... I'm (straight, bi, trans, gay, a, metro) sexual. My (husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/dog/cat/other pets) and I have (genital, oral, anal, other) sex. How often:___ times per (Year, month, week, day, hour) I have the following tattoos, scars and piercings:________________. My race is: (White, Black, Asian, American Indian, Boston Marathon, NASCAR) My religion is: (Christian (Catholic, Protestant) If Protestant, which sect: ____________) As we think of more embarrassing questions, we'll send more forms for you to fill out! Thanks, Your Nosey Neighbors Now, do you see what a stupid question this is? Fun for afficianados of Adolf Hitler, but not much fun in a free society. Just a guess, but I'll bet that Heather hasn't announced her sexuality because it is irrelevant to the job. Homer's advice: Judge people by what they DO and SAY in public that is relevant to the position they're seeking, not who they ARE or DO in the privacy of their own home. _______________________________________________________ I believe Jim Young has been discriminated against for blowing the whistle. I wish him success in his fight for justice. Ex- assistant city manager John Jones should be on trial, not Jim Young. _______________________________________________________ Someone raised a good question in the newspaper: why in the world is Sonny McCoy working to get Safe Harbor Hotel approved for developers? Sonny should recind Are we naming the Key West airport after this man? _______________________________________________________ Monroe County Citizens: You can get to know one of your candidate's Carlos Rojas, check out his website below: Carlos Rojas is running for Sonny McCoy's seat, district 3...Monroe citizens...get yourself educated about the candidates and what they stand for before Aug. 26, Primary....we need good conscientious candidates for good government here in this county. You know what has happened here in Monroe County with "The Gang of Three" it time for a change and turning out to vote on the 26th is a step in the right direction... votecarlos2008.com _______________________________________________________ can you afford to vote Democrat? If you’re married, file jointly, and your combined income is $120,000, in 1999 under the Clinton tax plan, you would have been in the 31% bracket; your tax would have been about $37,200. In 2008 with the same income, still married, you’d be in the 25% bracket; your tax will be about $30,000. That's $7500 bucks cheaper with the Republican tax plan. Does that mean that the Democrat bray that the Republicans tax cuts only benefit the rich is Donkey Dung? Yes it does! Hmmm, was it Obama or was it Clinton who said that they would kill the Republican tax cuts? Now I remember, it was both of them. _______________________________________________________ Kim Wigington has a new website, she is running for Dixie Spehar's seat, County Commissioner District 1...please take a moment to visit her website, it is important to get to know what your candidates stand for, how the candidate will help make Monroe County a better place to live. We need to educate ourselves in order to vote intelligently at the Primary on August 26, which will be the race between Kim Wigington and Dixie Spehar. Please pass this along to your friends for consideration to vote for Kim Wigington on Aug. 26, 2008. You already know what "The Gang of Three" has done to our budget, our beloved Keys, with over-development, spending of our tax dollars on such things as the Hickory House Restaurant, sinking of the Vandenberg, Key West Airport, just to name a few….so take a minute and acquaint yourself with Kim Wigington…please… |

May 13, 2008 I enjoy reading letters to editor written by Roger Kostmayer. He raises national and international issues, which heightens awareness of global events. In his letter to editor yesterday, Monday, May 12th, he wrote about our judicial system, electing judges, our high rate of incarceration and compared us with other countries. The U.S. has the highest rate, spends the most money for it’s jail system than any other country in the world. And it is not because of our large size, it is based on percentage of our population. We imprison 1 out of every 10 persons who live in this country. That is enormous! Mr. Kostmayyer raised points that I totally agree with, but I want to share what I believe are factors why our unbelievable high prison statistics exist, as the crime rate has actually gone down. When something does not make sense, there is an underlying factor not easily seen which most likely is forcing an unnatural direction. This country rationalizes in our economy, that in our capitalistic society, if you leave the free trade market alone, then supply and demand with control balance for our economy. But when outside influences, unfair tactics, are injected into this philosophy, it becomes diseased and corrupt and cannot operate fairly and cannot remain balanced. In the case of our prison system, it is the fact that our government had started to outsource prisons, the running and operations of prisons to private companies. We have seen the damage privatization of this war in Iraq and local hospitals, has cost us citizens. By outsourcing jobs once performed by government workers, we now have given those duties to the private sector who has proven to be unfit and unaffordable. With the war, soldiers use to cook their own food, clean their own camps and perform all duties related to battle duty. Now, private persons are hired by private companies who are charging our government so much money for a variety of ice cream flavors and gourmet food to be served to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, at ridiculous prices. These private companies have also been found to lie in their billing for services, and expenses - creating “make believe” expenses in order to get more money from our government. Remember the millions of dollars Haliburton over charged us tax payers for gasoline? We never used that gas. In regards to private hospitals, it is not the people who come into the emergency rooms with no insurance that is costing this private system so much, it is the record breaking CEO’s, administrators and stock holders, who are making record profits. Hospitals will charge $10.00 for an aspirin and give you every test they could possibly give you, whether you need it or not. It’s good for their business! These institutes, once operated by the government, now privatized, have become profit driven. The system now, must satisfy stockholders, CEO’s, administrators. The irony, is that their workers are usually paid less than their counter parts in government operated facilities. Unions are also weakened by these privatized companies. The end result is that the workers get paid less, while the fat cats on top get more than their fair share. This creates such an incentive, and corrupts what was once a healthy system into an unnatural corruption. To my first point, the more persons are sent to prison, for whatever crime, the more private prison companies will make their millions. There is a reason why we have such a high rate of citizens incarcerated, and it has to do with the increase number of private prisons operating this sector of our society. There is money to be made under the table. And to bring this issue of long jail terms to the Keys, why in the world do you give a young woman, who lost her baby due to starvation (the woman herself skinny and unhealthy looking), obviously an unfit mother …… twenty years in prison? Because judges reward these private industries. It is a corrupt system. Once you allow profits to be made for services communities rely on, you no longer are servicing the citizens, but servicing private business. Money, is the root of all evil. |

May 11, 2008 I recently visited the Keys. The last time I was here, was in 1990. I would never have thought I was in the same place. It's sad, how this beautiful island use to be and what it is now. Last time I was here, there was a whole different feel to the place. It was fun, energetic, affordable and I couldn't wait to come back. I have retired from my job, and dreamed I would move down here to live. I can't believe all the buildings that have gone up. There is so much traffic. I can't park my car and it costs a fortune at your meters. Restaurants are expensive and so is the supermarket. I wanted to swim at the beach during all the time I was here, but found out the water was so polluted that I was advised not to swim in the water. How could you locals ruin this once beautiful paradise! _______________________________________________________ Craig Fugate (who works for the state of Fl. ) is my hero. He is protecting the keys from over development. Now Sonny McCoy is trying to come up with a new plan to push through this 300 room luxury hotel which developers want to build in Stock Island. It has, and always will be, a development ploy to save developers millions of dollars in fees. If the developers want the hotel so bad, they should pay for it (the county needs this money desperately) and they should stop lying about it being a hurricane shelter. Irene Toner... your a winner! stand up to those money hungry developers. Ty Symroski - your a loser for trying to push it through. George Neguent - your a winner for bringing this to Craig's attention. _______________________________________________________ Congratulations to GLEE! you did a great job this weekend _______________________________________________________ I love the keys, and will never leave, no matter how expensive it gets _______________________________________________________ Could I add or give a different point of view that *there are different types of architects *and would like to add a different aspect or thought to the poster that said "Carlos Rojas is an architect" and "Electing him will be just like hiring a Realtor to stop development". There is a hierarchy amongst architects. At the bottom are architects who build to feed their own ego. Typically, they build monolithic buildings as large as they can. Some become famous and some become hated. Sonny McCoy is just such an architect. Next, are those architects who participate in jail, strip mall, and tract housing construction. These architects are strictly in it for the money. Next, there are architects that view buildings as an individual artistic expression. These architects also tend to have large egos, but are more on the artistic side. They do few projects throughout their life, but garner great acclaim. Near the top of the architecture hierarchy are those who concern themselves with the big picture of how their buildings fit in with the surrounding buildings, and how they affect the community that they serve. These are amongst the most beloved of buildings and architects. Also at the top, are those architects that forgo the fortune and fame. They choose to preserve existing buildings. Often they adapt existing buildings to new uses or add to them to keep them economically viable. These architects are rarely famous, but are crucial to sustainable construction and the preservation of architectural heritage. Carlos Rojas is among these architects. To compare Sonny McCoy, to Carlos Rojas is like comparing an ambulance chasing lawyer to a human rights lawyer.Carlos knows the differences between them. Carlos knows how to beat such a crafty person as Sonny McCoy because he too is an architect. It’s like fighting fire with fire. _______________________________________________________ My beautiful niece was murdered on October 24, 1986. Her ex husband who shot her to death in a hospital lobby while she was on her knees praying is eligible for parole. Our family will be meeting with the Parole Board in Raleigh, N. C. in August, 2008. Can you offer me any suggestions? Barbara B. Evans _______________________________________________________ Who to vote for.....
